View Case Study

Xtream Arena, a 5,100 plus seat multi-purpose structure, is a one-of-a-kind facility in the Midwest. Due to its great flexibility, it can host athletic competitions and tournaments, a variety of varsity and club University of Iowa Athletic sports, concerts, ceremonies, youth sports, and much more.

In addition to the Xtream Arena & GreenState Family Fieldhouse, which holds five basketball courts, is The Johnson County Historical Society, the Antique Car Museums, and mixed-use retail. Also planned is an integrated six-story hotel and a future light rail transit building that will connect to the University of Iowa campus.

The arena structure is a composite slab, precast stadia, steel beam and column structure with a PEMB superstructure enclosure. The mixed-use retail is a composite concrete slab with a steel beam and column structure. The Fieldhouse is framed with deep long span custom steel trusses and was designed for a second level baseball diamond. The hotel is a podium type structure with three levels of precast hollowcore framing with wood construction for the upper floors. The entire project is founded upon a combination of driven steel piles or shallow foundations supported by soils reinforced with rammed aggregated piers. Changing site grade elevations necessitated the use of multiple tall retaining and basement foundation walls.

The Xtream Arena & GreenState Family Fieldhouse are just the beginning of a 180-acre $190 million mixed-use development that the city of Coralville, in partnership with the State of Iowa and private investors, are creating in the Iowa River Landing (IRL).
